A lifelong resident of the area, he began his career as an entrepreneur in the early 1960's when he owned and operated Van Brocklin Hardware. He also owned and operated Van's Harbor Inn (now known as Shay's Chophouse) for many years. He currently lives in Onekama, Michigan with his two dogs, Dutchess and Daisy.
